And in his typical spirit of improvement, he was quick to invest his time and expertise into designing a superior hardshell rooftop tent. All this, without ever having to compete for a campsite, find a flat surface, or pitch a single pole.įrom that moment, Tim knew rooftop tents would be a lifelong obsession. As an avid outdoor adventurer, a rooftop tent provided a night’s sleep as comfortable as his own bedroom - only to open his window and be greeted by fresh mountain air and awe-inspiring alpine peaks. Using his first rooftop tent was a turning point for Tim. Thus began his lifelong pursuit of modifying, designing, and creating outdoor camping gear that made packing up and sleeping under the stars easier and more comfortable than ever. He spent his childhood traversing the Alaskan wilderness with hiking boots on his feet and camping gear on his back, strapping on his first pair of skis when he was barely 3 years old.įrom a young age, Tim understood how being immersed in nature can shape who we are, and inspire who we want to be.Īs he grew older and began to explore further - spending winters skiing in Chamonix, France, and summers mountain biking in Boulder - Tim came to appreciate how his camping gear was the key to accessing the outdoor lifestyle he’d been raised to love. Tim Nickles, the Founder of Roofnest, is a 25-year Boulder resident who was practically raised outdoors. An excellent product with a very involved owner make for a bright future. He's answered every question that I've had, which has been many, both promptly and courteously. Lastly, enough can't be said about Tim's level of customer service. If anything, I could possibly be seeing a slight gain in gas mileage due to possible aerodynamic improvements. Because the tent mounts just above the sides of our truck bed and well below the top of the cab, the fuel economy hasn't been adversely affected. Queen sized flat sheets are ideally sized for this purpose. Extra care must be taken when entering and exiting the tent with shoes on, but it's perfectly doable. For what it's worth, one can also use regular bedding in lieu of sleeping bags. The included shoe holders were an especially nice touch. Space wise, the tent was roomier than I expected and there was ample storage, including hooks for our damp hiking gear.

There was some internal condensation on the walls at night, but it quickly dried and could possibly be mitigated entirely once we figure out how to properly vent it. Any water had beaded up and flowed down the sides. As a matter of fact, when we went to stow it the canvas was mostly dry. The tent was sat erected in a steady 36 hour drizzle and didn't allow any water intrusion. I'm pleased to report that it performed very well. After all, you don't always get to use your gear under ideal circumstances and we wanted to know how our Roofnest (and other untested gear) would hold up. We headed out despite knowing the forecast. We mounted it on our long bed (8') F150 using a Yakima Bedrock and drove to a nearby national forest for some camping and hiking. Despite some shipping complications (freight company's fault, not Roofnest's), we received our Eagle just in time for a rain soaked holiday weekend. Yes, we could have saved a little money and had more space, but we opted for a hard shell model and Roofnest got the nod. After hemming and hawing for a bit, we opted to go with Roofnest over competing solid canvas rooftop tents.
